Fix the Wimbledon branch: TfL to study it, the Government to fund it

1. The upgrade stopped short of us. In 2020 TfL decided not to re-signal our branch as part of its modernisation of the central District line, and restated that in July 2021 and June 2024. The new signalling stops at East Putney; Southfields, Wimbledon Park and Wimbledon still run on signalling dating back to the 1980s.
2. The £500,000 works are a patch. Just before the 2026 Championships, TfL and Network Rail announced £500,000 for the old equipment. It doesn’t replace the signalling that causes the delays.
3. Each has said which part is its own. The Minister for Rail says a feasibility study for the branch is “a matter solely for” the Mayor and TfL. TfL says it “would definitely be looking for support from central government” to pay for the fix.
4. Our ask: TfL to study it, the Government to fund it. TfL commissions and publishes a feasibility study, with Network Rail, and the Government funds the fix it identifies.

Fix The District is run by volunteer passengers on the Wimbledon branch: Max Barber (chair), Susan Cusack and Dana Trometer. We’re forming a small committee, with a treasurer, so the campaign’s money is held openly. We’re not a political party or a charity, and we’re not part of TfL.
